we are home!
We arrived home late Thursday (10/13) night safe and sound. The natural disasters in the region (hurricane, earthquake) didn't affect us in the least, although we did see mudslides from the air as we approached Guatemala City. Our visit/pick-up trip capped off a snag-free and delightful adoption process--we feel very fortunate that everything went smoothly. And as for Katherine--she is just the most adorable, easygoing and fun baby! It's definitely been an adjustment learning how to take care of her and create new family routines, but not a difficult one. Luckily, I don't have to return to work until November 21, hooray! We feel very blessed!
'tis the season
Now that our adoption is complete and also because this is the time of year that UNICEF holds one of its biggest fund drives, I wanted to ask all of you to educate yourselves about UNICEF and its anti-adoption stance. Partly because of UNICEF's efforts, there are new laws proposed in Guatemala which would make international adoption more difficult or impossible. Please read UNICEF's own 'official' position on inter-country adoption, then read what people in the adoption community have to say about the situation. I do believe UNICEF does some good in this world, but their efforts to change adoption laws just doesn't reflect the realities of children's needs in many countries.
no knitting
Of course, there has been no knitting done around here, but not for lack of desire on my part! Katherine's baby blanket is still not complete - - - blush - - - Hopefully it'll be done before she begins high school. I did pick up a few new knitting magazines the other day, most notably the new Knitscene by Interweave Press. Definitely a welcome addition to the 'young, hip, fresh' genre, with items a person might actually want to create and use. What do you all think? xoxo Brooks
