baby blanket WIP
Finally, I share with you Katherine's blanket as a work-in-progress. I'm using the wonderful and reversible 'tumbling blocks' pattern from Barbara Walker's Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns. The yarn is TLC Cotton Plus from Coats and Clark, a soft machine-washable cotton and acrylic blend. My plan is to switch colors here in a little bit, so that when I'm finished there will be four color blocks of alternating colors, with a sawtooth border in a varigated tweedy hue of the same yarn (3324 Thistle). This is a fun project, but (as with all of my projects) now that I'm almost halfway, I wish I were finished already, so I could start working on the next thing! xoxo Brooks

wow, wow, wow
We had such a wonderful trip. Katherine is such a sweet-natured little doll baby, it was easy taking care of her (after a night or two of figuring out what she needed!). And it's clear that her foster mother absolutely dotes on her and has been and will be taking excellent care of her until we are able to return and bring her home to the U.S. In addition, I can't say enough about how nice the Guatemalan people are--everyone was genuinely pleasant and helpful, and everyone commented on how beautiful our daughter is! Here is a short list of things I'll miss about our daughter:

  1. the way her tiny fingers curl around the pinky of whoever is feeding her
  2. her squeals and gurgles of joy and delight
  3. the sound of her breathing as she sleeps
  4. her expression of rapt attention while listening to a bedtime story
  5. the way she always stops crying when one of us picks her up and hugs her

The best news is: we should be able to go down and get her within another month or two, if all goes well. Keep your fingers crossed for us! xoxo Brooks
